Travel advice - simple things you need to know before you travel

Accommodation
Make sure when you plan your trip you book at least your first night away. Theres nothing worse than arriving in a foreign country tired and vulnerable and unaware of your surroundings. A good rest will make all the difference.
Alcohol, drugs and laws
When drinking alcohol abroad, make sure you know your limits, quite often, you'll find if you have an accident whilst drunk you will not be insured. Drink and drug related offences carry different punishments in different countries, ensure you have all the facts to hand before you travel as in some countries, charges can be as harsh as capital punishment. Also, spiking of drinks is a worldwide issue so ensure you never lose sight of your drink.
Keep alert
Make sure you know what is going on around you at all times. Avoid any situations or locations that you may feel are unsafe particularly at night. Also, in many major cities around the world, pick-pocketing is a problem so keep all your valuables safe at all times.
Food and drink
Wherever you are travelling, check that the tap water is safe to drink and if not ensure you have a good supply of bottled water. Check that foods (especially meats and fish) are cooked freshly try to avoid meat in restaurants that lack refigeration.
Communication
Always keep in touch with friends and family through email and telephone wherever possible. Also, keep a not of all useful contact numbers, policies, flight times and destinations at home for family members and friends to access easily.
Health and vaccines
Always visit your GP at least 6 weeks before you travel to ensure you have all the necessary vaccinations for all the destinations that you travel to. If unsure vist the governments healt site at www.doh.gov.uk
Insurance
Ensure that you have full comprehensive travel and medical insurance for when you travel. If you are likely to do activities whilst away, make sure you are covered for all of them and have all your policy details to hand when travelling.
Money
As a rule, you should try to work out how much you will need to live on each day and create a planned travel budget. Theres nothing worse than running out of money before the end of your trip.
Local info
Buy a good local guide book to help you when you travel and do pleanty of research before you go. Also, check out the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for updated information on your destinations at www.fco.gov.uk.
