Accommodation
Make sure when you plan your trip you book at least your
first night away. Theres nothing worse than arriving in
a foreign country tired and vulnerable and unaware of your
surroundings. A good rest will make all the difference. |

Alcohol, drugs and
laws
When drinking alcohol abroad, make sure you know your limits,
quite often, you'll find if you have an accident whilst
drunk you will not be insured. Drink and drug related offences
carry different punishments in different countries, ensure
you have all the facts to hand before you travel as in some
countries, charges can be as harsh as capital punishment.
Also, spiking of drinks is a worldwide issue so ensure you
never lose sight of your drink. |

Keep alert
Make sure you know what is going on around you at all times.
Avoid any situations or locations that you may feel are
unsafe particularly at night. Also, in many major cities
around the world, pick-pocketing is a problem so keep all
your valuables safe at all times. |

Food and drink
Wherever you are travelling, check that the tap water is
safe to drink and if not ensure you have a good supply of
bottled water. Check that foods (especially meats and fish)
are cooked freshly try to avoid meat in restaurants that
lack refigeration. |

Communication
Always keep in touch with friends and family through email
and telephone wherever possible. Also, keep a not of all
useful contact numbers, policies, flight times and destinations
at home for family members and friends to access easily. |

Health and vaccines
Always visit your GP at least 6 weeks before you travel
to ensure you have all the necessary vaccinations for all
the destinations that you travel to. If unsure vist the

Insurance
Ensure that you have full comprehensive travel and medical
insurance for when you travel. If you are likely to do activities
whilst away, make sure you are covered for all of them and
have all your policy details to hand when travelling. |

Money
As a rule, you should try to work out how much you will
need to live on each day and create a planned travel budget.
Theres nothing worse than running out of money before the
end of your trip. |

Local info
Buy a good local guide book to help you when you travel
and do pleanty of research before you go. Also, check out
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for updated
information on your destinations at www.fco.gov.uk. |

Passport and visa
info
Probably most importantly of all, check that your passport
is valid for at least six months from the start of your
trip and that you have all the necessary visas in place.
You can always also leave a photocopy of your passport with
family at home. |
